Vale of Glamorgan Council Deputy Leader Lis Burnett was joined by Welsh Government Minister for Economy and Transport Ken Skates AM to mark the opening of the new A4226, known locally as Five Mile Lane.
In a joint project that saw investment of more than £20 million, the new route, which runs from the Sycamore Cross junction of the A48 to the Weycock Cross roundabout in Barry, will be safer than its predecessor and offer improved journey times.
The scheme also brings a significant environmental benefit, with a range of plants along its route creating an ecological corridor.

Four more off-road vehicles have been seized in Cardiff as part of Operation Red Mana and all of the bikes will be crushed and recycled unless the owners claim their vehicle back with the correct paperwork and insurance details.
A 30-year-old man was arrested by South Wales Police recently on suspicion of driving while under the influence of drugs when he was stopped and had his bike seized in Coryton, Cardiff. A further three off-road vehicles were confiscated from the Rover Way area.
Cllr Michael Michael, Cabinet Member for Clean Streets, Environment and Recycling said, "The number of people in communities across the city who complain to me about these bikes and quads being ridden over park land and on the city's roads is increasing.

The government has confirmed it will close a legal loophole which has allowed drivers to escape prosecution for hand-held mobile phone use while behind the wheel.
Transport Secretary Grant Shapps, has announced that he will urgently take forward a review to tighten the existing law preventing hand-held mobile use while driving.
At present, the law prevents drivers from using a hand-held mobile phone to call or text. However, people caught filming or taking photos while driving have escaped punishment as lawyers have successfully argued this activity does not fit into the ‘interactive communication’ currently outlawed by the legislation.
