Road Safety Week in Rhondda Cynon Taf
Rhondda Cynon Taf's Road Safety Team is looking forward to Road Safety Week, at the end of November, with a programme of events for road users of all ages.
Tuesday 21 November: Working with South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, GoSafe and Treorchy Primary School’s Junior Road Safety Officers, the team will be providing road safety information at an event at ASDA, Tonypandy. As part of the event a South Wales Fire and Rescue Service will be on site with a fire appliance and GoSafe will be present with a safety camera van, to interact with as many people as possible from the community to answer any questions and to offer road safety advice.
Wednesday 22 and Thursday 23 November: Year 2 pupils from all over Rhondda Cynon Taf will be participating in Kerbcraft, learning the essential skills needed to be safer child pedestrians. Focussing on everything from the basics of the Green Cross Code to crossing at difficult locations such as between parked cars and at junctions.
Thursday 23 November: Pupils from St Margaret’s Catholic Primary School will be taking part in National Standards Level 1 Cycling. Year 6 pupils will be learning the basic bike handling skills they need in preparation to become proficient cyclists. Pupils that pass level 1, will move onto level 2, which is on road cycle training.
Friday 24 November: Drive Safer for Longer is an essential driving skills scheme for people aged over 65 years. A session will be held in Church Village and carried out in partnership with South Wales Police’s road safety team, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and an independent garage owner who all give brilliant advice on road safety and money saving matters. Tuesday 28 to Thursday 30 November: Mega Drive courses are being delivered in: Llwynypia Campus, Ysgol Gyfun Garthe Olwg and Ysgol Gyfun Llanhari. Working in partnership with South Wales Police, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and local driving instructors to educate pupils aged 15-17 on important road safety issues that they will start to encounter as they become passengers in friends’ cars and become drivers themselves.
