Targeting the #Fatal5 offences
A national #Fatal5 road safety campaign is running throughout July, as North Wales Police supports Operation Spotlight.
The four week-long campaign, led by the NPCC (National Police Chief’s Council) sees officers across the country carrying out a combination of enforcement activity as well as engagement and educational work aimed at raising awareness of the most common and dangerous road behaviours – the Fatal 5.
Diving whilst under the influence of drink and/or drugs, speeding, using a mobile phone at the wheel, not wearing a seatbelt and careless /dangerous driving make up the #Fatal5 and North Wales Police has a robust strategy around enforcing these offences.
Since 1st July officers from the Roads Crime Unit have dealt with drivers for a variety of offences including drink and drug driving, speeding and using a mobile phone behind the wheel.
Some of the high speeds recorded included 53mph in a 30mph zone in the Llandudno area and 60mph in a 40mph zone in Rhyl. High speeds across the 20mph areas have also been recorded – some as high as 43mph.
Tickets have also been issued to motorists for having no valid MOT on their vehicles, careless driving – including one driver who was caught with his dog on his lap whilst he was driving. Vehicles have been seized due to drivers not having a valid licence or insurance, drivers not wearing a seatbelt and having a vehicle in a dangerous condition.
Sergeant Danny Rees of the Roads Crime Unit said: “Every fatality on our roads is a tragedy, that is why we are committed to keeping the roads safe and will continue to take action against those who commit offences on our roads.
“Whilst we target the #Fatal5 offences 365 days a year, this national campaign helps us shine a light on bad driver and rider behaviour which can easily results in a serious or fatal road traffic collision.
“Our message is simple – take care on the roads. The consequences of not doing so are potentially deadly to you, your passengers and other road users.
“We make no apology for stopping drivers who are committing a Fatal 5 offence – please heed the warning.”
