Road safety operation in Flint
A driver was arrested on suspicion of drug driving and several others were stopped for offences including driving whilst using a mobile phone and driving without a seatbelt during a road safety operation recently.
The road safety checks - which included roadside eyesight tests, were carried out by officers from the Roads Crime Unit as part of the North Wales Police commitment in keeping the roads safe for all.
The operation resulted in:
- One male arrested on suspicion of driving whilst under the influence of drugs after testing positive for cannabis at the roadside
- A prohibition notice on a vehicle after it was found to have defects
- 20 TORs (Traffic Offence Reports) issued to motorists after they were caught driving without a seatbelt
- 12 TORs issued to drivers after they were caught using their mobile phone behind the wheel
- 97 eyesight tests being carried out at the roadside - 2 of those failed
- 2 TORs issued for defective tyres after cord was exposed
- 1 TOR for an insecure load Driver stopped and found to be driving without a licence
- One driver issued with a TOR after a child was found not to be in a car seat
- One knife seized
- Other offences included misrepresented number plates, defective lights and vehicles being used with insufficient light coming through their windows.
Sergeant Duncan Logan of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “Road safety is everyone’s responsibility, and every single day we act against those responsible for illegal driving.
“Despite our repeated warnings it is disappointing that a minority of motorists continue to flout the law and endanger not only themselves but other road users by using a mobile phone behind the wheel.
“The penalty for this offence is six points on your licence and a £200 fine – if a new driver receives six penalty points within the first two years of passing their test, their licence will automatically be revoked.
“Wearing a seatbelt is also a crucial step in protecting yourself and others on the road and it is worrying that a 3-second task is being avoided by some drivers.
“With autumn just around the corner we are urging drivers to ensure that their vehicles are safe and pay particular attention to tyres and lights.
“We make no apologies in trying to reduce serious and fatal collisions in line with road safety initiatives such as this. Further operations will be carried out over the next few weeks as we are committed to making the roads of north Wales as safe as possible. If this operation prevented one person from being injured or worse, killed - then we see it as a success.”
