The Community Bike Recycling and Skills Project, Torfaen
The Community Bike Recycling and Skills Project is a newly formed a community-led initiative at Garnsychan Partnership Community Hub and Recycling Centre.
Working in partnership with Active Travel and Lloyds British Cycling, the project is expanding access to bike recycling, skills development, and volunteering opportunities across Torfaen. In light of previous structural changes within Changing Gearz a once Torfaen Borough led project, there was a clear need to strengthen and diversify pathways of support for young people, ensuring continuity, stability, and progression opportunities.
The Garnsychan Community Hub operates as a trauma-centred community hub, with over 12 years’ experience delivering employability, skills, and progression programmes for young people and adults facing multiple barriers stepped up to offer this support. Our expertise underpins the safe, inclusive, and supportive delivery of the bike recycling project, ensuring participants are engaged in a way that builds confidence, resilience, and long-term progression.
Supported and backed by the Active Travel team we are now operating from newly set up workshop facilities at the hub, with a qualified mechanic the project will collect donated bicycles, refurbish them through supervised training sessions, and redistribute them back into the community via the hub’s retail space. In parallel, Active Travel have launched its Community Bike Library from the hub which available for residents to hire bikes for free for leisure and business purposes, whatever the commute, our hub has got you sorted.
