Police officers in North Wales stopped nearly 50 drivers as part of a continued effort to improve safety on some of the region’s busiest roads.
Officers from the Roads Crime Unit took part in Op Tramline, a national roads policing initiative which uses an unmarked heavy goods vehicle provided by National Highways. The specialist HGV unit is deployed by police forces across the UK to patrol key road networks, targeting all motorists, including commercial vehicle drivers.
The elevated position of the HGV cab gives trained officers a clear view into passing vehicles, allowing them to detect unsafe driving behaviour. Offences are captured on camera in real time and relayed to colleagues in marked and unmarked police vehicles, who then stop the drivers and deal with the offences accordingly.

The Vale of Glamorgan Council has appointed specialist contractors to carry out road improvements throughout the County. Tarmac Trading has been selected to undertake carriageway resurfacing work in the Vale for the next three years. That improves road condition, safety and lifespan by removing worn-out road layers.
Another company, Road Maintenance Services Ltd, will be responsible for surface dressing roads over the next two years. This is a technique that involves sealing the road surface against water ingress, preventing potholes and improving skid resistance.
Cllr Mark Wilson, Vale of Glamorgan Council Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood and Building Services, said: “We know from our recent budget consultation that improving the condition of roads is a top priority for our residents.

Roads policing officers at South Wales Police stopped 63 vehicles recently as part of an operation to tackle illegal driving in south Wales. They joined forces with National Highways and the Drivers Vehicle Standards Agency in the week-long operation.
A heavy goods vehicle (HGV) provided by National Highways was used by officers to keep an eye on drivers; the elevated seated position in a HGV cabin being ideal for officers to see into vehicles and spot unsafe driving behaviour.
A total of 63 vehicles were stopped; the majority were for drivers using a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt, but a wide range of other offences such as driving without insurance, without an MOT or road tax, and other vehicle defects, were also detected.

Seventeen new bikehangars will be installed across Cardiff to help residents securely park their bikes without having to bring them into their homes.
The hangars, each providing space for six bikes while taking up only half a car parking bay, will be installed on residential streets in Canton, Riverside, Plasnewydd, Cathays and Splott later this month. The scheme aims to make cycle parking more convenient and secure, so residents can access their bikes more easily, to encourage people to cycle, instead of using their private car.
Following consultation with residents in August 2025, 17 locations were identified from an initial list of 50 potential sites. Further engagement took place between December 2024 and January 2025, allowing residents to raise questions and concerns, which have now been addressed. A decision has been taken to proceed with the first phase of the scheme.

Cardiff Council is preparing an updated Active Travel map showing where people can currently walk and cycle safely across the city – and where new and improved routes are planned in the future - which is a requirement set by Welsh Government.
Before the map is submitted to Welsh Ministers, the Council will carry out a 12 week public consultation from May to June 2026, giving residents, businesses and community groups the chance to comment on the proposals and suggest improvements. The consultation will include targeted engagement to ensure the views of different communities are properly considered. The updated Active Travel Network Map brings together existing walking and cycling routes with proposals for future improvements, helping the Council plan how people can make every day journeys without relying on their private car.
Cllr Dan De’Ath, Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning, Transport and Climate Change, said: “The Council is committed to building a network for both cyclists and pedestrians, so that both walking and cycling becomes an attractive option to those who are able, instead of relying on travelling by car. The Active Travel Network Map supports the wider aims that we want to establish - to improve health and wellbeing, reduce congestion, cut air pollution further and make it easier for people to travel around Cardiff safely and sustainably.”

Road Safety Wales is encouraging all motorcyclists to take advantage of a free scheme which could be lifesaving in the event of a collision.
Hopefully you’ll never need to use a CRASH Card, but if the worst happens a medical professional will be able to see the green dot on the right hand corner of your visor/helmet and can look for the card inside the helmet lining.
The details that you write on the card could provide vital information for attending ambulance crews, saving valuable time and helping treatment, especially if you’re unconscious or unable to communicate.
